We’re always hearing misconceptions about state funding of universities. Many people think that state schools are fully (or near-fully) funded by the state. Others think that tuition covers it all. But, check out this chart, which shows State Appropriations as a Percentage of UMBC’s Total Budget over the course of UMBC’s nearly 50-year history:

That’s quite a dip!
State schools are, in fact, only partly funded by the state. And state funding of Maryland higher education institutions has been falling steadily since UMBC’s founding. The rest of the budget is covered, in part, by charitable contributions from supporters like you.
